Cabbage Defense Review

Cabbage Defense, as the name suggests, takes the Plants vs. Zombies theme but twists the tower defense play back into the more traditional birds-eye view. Zombie bunnies - yep, zombie bunnies - race down a path towards my farmer character, and I protect him by placing a menagerie of offensive foliage between him and the bunnies. I can also use my laser pitchfork to shoot beams at the rushing undead bunnies, and across 60 levels of ascending difficulty it's my duty to keep my famer's health up and the zombunny population down.

The game itself works absolutely fine. The little undead bunnies hop down the path, and at first I can scrape enough money to place some cheap plants to take them out with some projectile seeds and whatnot. And the game follows the tried-and-tested tower defense path, so to speak, from hereon in. With each wave the bunnies increase in number, but with increasing coinage in my pocket I can employ dearer, stronger plants, like the ravenous stinger and chomper cabbages which nom up the rampant rabbits. The strategy is very basic really up until the last few waves, but being able to shoot lasers at the bunnies keeps it from being stale. The game is over in half an hour so it doesn't outstay its welcome.

My issue with Cabbage Defense is that it's just so forgettable. There's a game with some potential here, even if the concept is a rather obvious cut-and-paste. Throw in a mixture of paths, enemies, some upgrades for the pitchfork and you'd have a neat game. Heck, even one more background track instead of the same repeated sequence of bland bleep bloops would help to paper over any lack of inspiration. Tower defense is a saturated genre as it is, and it's a real shame to see a game like Cabbage Defense make more effort to look similar rather than stand out.

In any case, at $1.99 it's presently too expensive for what it offers (or doesn't). Slice that price in half and Cabbage Defense is innocuous in its fleeting entertainment, and for those who like a bit of tower defense there's even a bit of challenge to savor towards the end.
