There's a strong argument floating around that claims our reliance on technology is causing damage to our short-term memory abilities. From apps that take notes, to apps that remind us of things we need to do, to apps that periodically tell us to drink more water, there is a danger that we are becoming dependent on technology to remember everything for us. Wait, what was I saying again?
WherezMyStuff is an app that aims to create a database of items and their locations, helping people to remember where they last left them. Users can either type the information in manually, record it vocally, take a picture of it, or even do all three. Although it may be a little rough around the edges, and certainly out-of-fashion in terms of iOS7's style update, but the simple menus don't detract from the basic functionality of the app.
One thing this app desperately needs though is the option to enable a password, especially if users don't secure their device with one. Sure, if I'm just using it to help me remember where I've stashed a comic book or DVD then I have no problem with people knowing where it's masterfully hidden. However, if I'm hiding something important like a spare house key or travel money then those locations need to be protected.
Ultimately, WherezMyStuff does its job well. It's a simple idea done right, even if that idea is substituting for basic human memory capabilities. It's an app that shouldn't exist by rights, but the human condition is apparently in a state where we actually need it. For iOS device users of an older generation, however, this could be the perfect memory tool.
