Chaotic Box's arena survival game Silverfish was one that I recommended when it released back in November, giving it 4.5 out of 5 stars. However, if that review did not persuade you to rush out and download the game right away, or if you prefer to try out games before you plunk the massive sum of a couple dollars on them, then a risk-free opportunity for you to try out Silverfish has come your way in Silverfish Free. However, even if you've played Silverfish's full version already, you may want to pay attention to Silverfish Free.

If you listened to Episode 69 of The Portable Podcast, you will recall that I said I loved lite/free versions of games that feature exclusive content, like Trainyard Express, and Silverfish Free falls squarely in that category. See, Silverfish Free only contains one mode, based off of the Reaper mode already present in the full game, where you rush to collect Power Pods to refill your POW bar, that drains over time and if you hit enemies. Silverfish Free's big difference is that you are limited to collecting only 30 Power Pods, which not only limits the amount of time that you can play the game, but it also changes the way you play the game. See, in the full version, you may just be focusing on survival, killing enemies when in MAX POW when it's convenient, but here in Silverfish Free, you have to be smart and efficient, as you have to start to time when you pick up Power Pods to get the most points from killing enemies, balanced out with keeping your POW bar high enough so that you can activate MAX POW mode. Getting a high score and topping this version's leaderboard is about cunning as much as it is survival. If you love collecting achievements, then you'll be glad to hear that the game comes with 4 exclusive achievements not present in the full version of Silverfish.

This free version of Silverfish provides a great taste of what the full version gives you, while still providing something distinctive that might keep you coming back to it, even if you've played the full version. As well, if you haven't picked up Silverfish's full version yet, it was recently updated with a fourth game mode, Haste, which is like a faster and more difficult Reaper mode. This game is an underappreciated gem, and I suggest that you at least download this free version of the game to see what is so enjoyable about it.
