Tank Battle: East Front 1943 Review

For those who like their strategy more lightweight, any title with hex-based movement can look intimidating. I should know as that's exactly how I feel about the genre. Fortunately, in the case of Tank Battle: East Front 1943, this is a title that knows it's a mobile release, being much more welcoming to most.

Tank Battle: East Front 1943 follows the conflict between Soviet forces and German panzer armies in 1943. Players control one or the other side, with one campaign available for each as well as an introductory tutorial campaign. To an extent, the tutorial really isn't needed. Tank Battle: East Front 1943 is very simple to learn. A turn-based game, players tap on a unit before tapping where they wish to place it or what they wish to attack. It's simple stuff and far from complex in any way. That comes with some issues, such as the inability to confirm a move or undo it, but at least it lends itself to fast-paced progress. Once the player has moved all their units, the AI then takes over and so forth.

Each level offers different objectives that must be completed, generally relating to wiping out a sufficient enemy force or capturing key objectives. They're varied enough and at times can be quite challenging.

Having said that, Tank Battle: East Front 1943 isn't a game for strategy buffs due to its simplified nature. Instead, it's a bite-sized slice of strategy, ideal for when gaming on the move. It teaches basic lessons such as the rock, paper, scissors, mentality of certain troops being better at certain tasks, while also learning the importance of flank attacks and different terrain, but it's not too involved. It's consistently accessible and all the better for it.

Hex-based strategy gaming has rarely been as accessible as it is here.
