Striker Soccer 2 Review

Striker Soccer 2 plays a reasonable game of arcade - rather than simulation like - soccer. However, that doesn't stop it from being frequently hindered by a freemium layout and an overly-harsh energy system.

Mildly reminiscent of classics such as Kick Off and Sensible Soccer, Striker Soccer 2 is simple to get to grips with. A virtual joystick and two virtual buttons dictate play, with the buttons changing purposes depending on who has the ball. One button either shoots or tackles, while the other passes or steals the ball. With a fixed joystick it's possible to make a few mistakes when moving, but it's nothing serious.

Throughout, Striker Soccer 2 is a simple yet satisfying enough game. It offers a plentiful supply of different teams to choose from, although such choices don't affect the core experience. There are plenty of different game modes too; with the Competition mode forming the bulk of the gameplay, as well as a Friendly mode, Kids mode, and the Challenge mode. Much of what can be done is dictated by the game's energy system though, and it's quite restrictive. Players are able to participate in four matches before they must wait over 20 minutes to play again.

This is somewhat circumvented by the Challenge mode, allowing players to complete certain objectives within particular matches, but it still feels pretty heavy-handed. It affects how easily one can get drawn into the Competition mode.

Keeping it simple, Striker Soccer 2 is a pleasant game otherwise, but unlike superior titles in the field it doesn't immediately feel worth spending money on. Given the way in which it encourages one to delve into the virtual wallet, it doesn't help matters. Enjoy Striker Soccer 2 as a passing interest, but don't be surprised if one day soon that wait for the energy bar to recharge is enough to make one forget all about it.
