Spacecom Review

Spacecom is a space battle strategy game that’s really pulled back on the looks. That is to say that it’s more a web of lines and dots than anything too fancy. This works for it, although it will seem a little confusing at first.

As the campaign explains, your main aim is to conquer your enemy’s territories. This sounds exciting but it doesn’t look it. For the most part, you’re witnessing a small blue shape go towards a big blue dot, before watching the dot change to a red dot, alongside a status bar telling you how things are going. Spacecom isn’t one for fancy graphics, by any means.

There are three types of craft to use - battle, siege, and invasion. Each has a different role, relating to how you take down an enemy star system. That’s hard to tell by just looking at them though, as it’s pretty tricky to see the difference.

That’s a similar story for identifying the different star systems, especially on the small screen of the iPhone. Each system has a different purpose, such as for repairing your crafts, building new ones, or simply offering resources, but it’s not a gripping way of demonstrating such things.

You can build defenses too for your areas, including ground troops, shields, and defensive grids, but again, it’s more in your imagination than anything.

Where the real meat of Spacecom comes from is with the random skirmishes and the online battles you can compete in. Unfortunately, you can’t save both your skirmishes and your campaign progress, though.

At times, Spacecom’s barebones nature works well in ensuring that this kind of strategy isn’t overly-complicated, but it does mean that it lacks some soul. It’s great for those focused solely on the strategy side of things, but you might soon find yourself wishing for a little more personality.
