Slingshot Braves has that vibrant feel about it that often comes from action RPGs. Bright, almost to a fault, and keen to throw itself in players's faces, it might seem initially quite confusing. Underneath that surface though is an interesting game that provides something a little different from the usual format of fighting.
The clue for that difference is in the name. Slingshot Braves requires players to aim their characters at opponents, thereby slingshotting them around and hopefully inflicting plenty of damage. It makes a change from the usual method of diving through menus or hitting an attack button. While at first it all feels a bit random, there's some strategy involved, too. It's possible to bounce around the arenas, returning to an enemy to inflict some extra damage or even sneak up behind them for a back attack.
It's a fun move and while, at first, it might seem slightly random, there's certainly a technique to it. It's also possible to co-ordinate combo attacks with the other party members, inflicting more damage that is essential when up against an enemy boss.
Elsewhere, Slingshot Braves is a pretty typical RPG. There are quests to work through, shops to use to buy new equipment and items, as well as the ability to upgrade many tools with material that can be gained throughout the game. The interface might be consistently messy but look past such visual issues and Slingshot Braves is mostly pretty accessible.
What's not so friendly is the pretty steeply priced in-app purchases. These are avoidable early on but I've no doubt they'll help one's progress later on, as is customary of such methods. Still, as something a little bit different, and with the added boon of an online co-op mode, Slingshot Braves is pleasant enough to play for a time.
