Shutter Review

Storage space is constantly an issue for anyone who has plenty of photos or videos on their iOS device. Given the price of iPhones and iPads, often it's not possible to get the size that one really wants so compromises must be made. Fortunately, there's now an app to make that choice a lot simpler. Shutter is a camera app that also offers infinite storage space via the Cloud. That's quite the lofty promise, but so far Shutter is looking pretty good.

Requiring a simple sign-up process, users can soon dive into Shutter and begin uploading all their photos and videos to a private Cloud. Everything stays entirely secure if the user wants it to, but there's also the option to share content with friends via a Photo Stream mode. That's handy but far from essential if one simply wants to have somewhere else safe to store their images.

Obviously the app takes a while to upload all images to the Cloud, but it's worth it. There's then the choice of being able to view some images while offline, up to 200 previously taken images, as well as opting to tag each photo for easier searching options at a later date. Each image already comes with a geolocation tag as well as details of the exposure and other settings from when it was snapped.

Ultimately though, Shutter keeps it reasonably simple, knowing what its key purpose is. It's handy being able to share images with others via the app, but just the sheer ability to store so much for free is a real boon on its own. As a cynic, I'd be wary of storing anything too sensitive there but as a handy backup and way to share content, it's useful. Bear in mind though, due to a technical mix up, the app suggests that there's only 5gb storage space through the service. Don't worry, there's plenty more than that!
