So, Rival Kingdoms: Age of Ruin is another base building game set in a fantasy world. I can hear sighing, and I don’t blame you. Wait though, because Rival Kingdoms: Age of Ruin is a good base building game. The kind that genuinely makes you want to come back for more.
Heavily focused on attacking your enemies, as well as following the single player campaign, Rival Kingdoms: Age of Ruin is a fairly fast paced experience. Sure, there are timers, but there’s usually something else to do while you wait.
You establish a base in the customary manner, putting down new units, and upgrading existing ones. There’s a free skip button for those items that don’t take long to replenish. Building a fortress that’s tricky to negotiate is key to success here, as is often the way within the genre.
It’s the combat that’s going to keep you most interested though. There’s a hefty single player campaign to play through, with a storyline courtesy of Rhianna Pratchett. It’s reasonably engaging too, with each battle being fairly quick to traverse. While you can only place units down and watch as they figure things out for themselves, you can use special creatures called Ancients to unleash special attacks at regular points, further ensuring the game feels fast in nature.
Elsewhere, you can band together with other players and form kingdoms, leading to being able to share resources, as well as form together to complete raids. It’s a more involved process than usual, and you’d be very wise to sign up as soon as possible.
Rival Kingdoms: Age of Ruin might initially seem like a lot of other games, but everything about it feels slightly superior to most. Right down to the fact that it’s reasonably generous with dishing out the premium currency, meaning you won’t feel corralled into buying anything. It’s well worth checking out.
