Tap To Play Review

Tap to Play is a nice idea that doesn’t entirely work - something that’s always a little frustrating to see. Figuring that not everyone wants to play asynchronous word games, but wants something a bit more action-packed, it’s a title that allows you to take it in turns to complete mini-games. It’s just unfortunate that the games aren’t all that great.

Starting out, only a few games are unlocked with more gained by using coins earned in-game. Each takes seconds to learn, which is kind of the problem. There’s one where you have to keep a bird flapping in the air in order to avoid missiles - that’s a matter of tapping and tilting gently. There’s one where you help catapult a fish skywards in order to grab things flying by. There’s an Endless Runner type game with a frog bouncing along while eating flies and avoiding obstacles. Later on there’s a simple racing game, plus a color-matching title.

It’s all pleasant enough but pretty shallow. Each game is fun for a few seconds but then gets a bit samey and repetitive. You take it in turns with either your friends or random opponents in a bid to get the highest score, and that’s it. It rarely feels particularly exciting, despite the fact that you can chat with them and potentially throw some trash talk their way. Random opponents aren’t much fun so you need to get a friend involved for maximum enjoyment.

Tap to Play tries to entice you into regularly playing through a plethora of game statistics, a leveling-up mechanic, and other social features, but it’s not quite enough to draw you in for an extended session or two. It’s a neat idea but there’s no stand-out game to really excite.
