The Hunger Games Adventures – Official Adventure Game of the Hunger Games has finally made its way to iOS. The game is developed by Funtactix, Inc in partnership with Lionsgate films, and it allows players the chance to explore the original Facebook game on their iPads.
I loved the book and the movie, so it was exciting to finally see an official iOS tie-in to both. While it’s not exactly challenging since it’s impossible to actually die in the game, it’s addictive nature makes it hard to stop playing. Die hard fans of the film will appreciate the actual music from the movie soundtrack.
Gamers get to create their own character before exploring beyond the fence of District 12. They’ll build their own safe-haven, complete exciting chapters to unlock the story and work on their survival skills. All the favorite characters like Katniss, Gale and Peeta are around to help players complete quests and explore Panem.
As gamers complete quests like bartering for goods and trapping animals, they earn coins, energy and experience points. Energy is spent performing actions in the game like collecting rocks and chopping down wood. Players will eventually find themselves without energy, which means they’ll have to wait for it to restore or resort to in-app purchases. One full energy point is earned every five minutes.
Since it takes time to restore energy, it’s not possible to play the game for hours without spending any money. Timing the experience out right makes the game more enjoyable, but sometimes it’s frustrating to have to wait to play again.
Although there’s plenty of waiting and the game isn’t exactly challenging, The Hunger Games Adventures does an excellent job expanding on the story. The quests are always fun and exciting, and there’s actually quite a bit of content packed into the game. The most enjoyable part is building and customizing the forest escape where it’s possible to relax, fish in a pond, practice archery and build arrowheads. Items in the escape are unlocked and available for purchase in the store as players complete side missions.
It’s an engaging game that does an excellent job tying into both the book and movie. The adventure never gets boring, although waiting for energy points to restore can be tiresome. The Hunger Games Adventures is completely free to download, and it’s recommendable to fans of the series and newcomers alike. Download and play it soon because for a limited time players can enter for a chance to win a trip to the set of The Hunger Games: Catching Fire.
