From Draw Something to Hanging With Friends, it would be a huge understatement to say that social games were the latest craze to sweep the App Store. But Hum a Song aims to differentiate itself from the saturated genre with it's addicting gameplay and unique style. Does it succeed?
In Hum a Song, players are tasked with selecting a song from a predetermined selection and then humming the tune to it for several seconds. This should prove to be a much more universal skill than say, drawing or guessing words, making sure that most players should be able to enjoy the game with ease.
The simplicity of Hum a Song is in a league of its own when compared to other turn-based games. Players simply select the option to start a new game, find an opponent and hum to their heart's content! The quality of the recording is very important in a game like this, and I never had any trouble understanding the person at the other end of my game and judging from their correct answers, they didn't have this problem either.
Some people with a more unorthodox taste in music (read, not Top-40) may find that locating a song they know and can hum could prove to be a bit of a challenge. Of course, the app does have 30 second previews of each song available to hum - so not all hope is lost!
One of the main problems facing social apps is ensuring that all players can find someone to play with at least 90% of the time, and thankfully this isn't an issue at all for Hum a Song. I was able to find an opponent within seconds for each of my ten searches for opponents. Unfortunately, not all opponents are created equal, and I sometimes struggled to understand what my opponent was humming. Thankfully, Hum a Song gives suggestions on which words could possibly make up the title of the song - making that sure that players aren't completely lost when their opponents humming skills aren't up to par.
Overall Hum a Song is definitely one of the best turn-by-turn multiplayer social games out there. Once players have gotten the hang of it, much like me, putting the game down will be a very challenging feat indeed!
