Horizon Calendar Review

With a clear and minimalist interface, calendar/weather app Horizon Calendar immediately fits into the aesthetics of iOS apps. It might not offer the natural language functionality of Fantastical but it's still a quality combination of calendar tools and weather updates.

Many a time, there'll be an appointment that weather is quite important. Whether it be an outdoors arrangement or simply to know what to wear to a meeting, it's handy to know if the weather is meant to involve cold rain or hot sunshine. Syncing up via iCloud and Google, like any self respecting calendar app should, Horizon Calendar offers an easily viewed list of dates, appointments and birthdays, while also providing the predicted temperature (in centigrade and fahrenheit) as well as an idea of the type of weather to expect. A percentage marker indicates the odds of rain.

Such information is viewable either as a whole page, providing a glance at the month ahead with a focus on the next couple of day's weather, or as a page demonstrating the week ahead in slightly more depth. In both cases, it's clear to see and interact with. Conveniently, it's possible to switch to a Night mode to reduce any screen glare at night. It's also possible to remove days without appointments, clearing all the unnecessary clutter.

Adding the time to an appointment is a little cumbersome, requiring users to enter the full time and adding a few key presses, but other than that, everything about Horizon Calendar is quite intuitive. Due to it taking slightly longer to add entries and times, I can't see it replacing Fantastical for everyone. For those whose work or social life revolves around the weather forecast, however, it's a convenient alternative. It's certainly a marked improvement over both the stock Calendar and Weather apps.
