bookkeep Review

bookkeep isn't the first app that aims to take the pain out of cataloguing one's book collection and reading habits, but it does a sound job of simplifying the process and doing away with frivolous features such as social sharing.

The app is essentially a glorified database tool, but in doing so it's to the point and simple to set up. There's no need to sign up to any services or attach any social network details, it all just works. A plus sign is about as complicated as it gets with that leading users to a place to enter title, author, and page count details. Once added, one can then update how many pages have been read through a sliding bar. It would have been convenient to manually enter the number reached, but the bar is pretty useful too.

When presented in list format, bookkeep offers a line to demonstrate how far one has progressed in a book, making it easy to know exactly how far one has got in a title. It's possible to create groups for such books too, collating them into any category one can imagine. For instance, it'd be easy to divide things up according to whether they're for work, study, or pleasure.

bookkeep keeps it very simple, so that's about all there is to it. There's enough here for it to be a useful tool but don't expect anything fancy. There's not even the ability to back lists up to another source, which is probably the most significant downfall to such a simple app. It's both refreshing but also a little limiting at times. For those who just want to list what they're reading though, and easily consult how things are going, bookkeep has it covered.
