GDC 2015 - Warfriends is Something Familiar That's Also a Little Different

Posted by Rob Rich on March 6th, 2015

About Fun's upcoming Warfriends is quite the interesting hybrid. It's a real-time, tactical, cover-based, multiplayer shooter.

The game centers around hiding your character behind one of four shields on the battlefield while occasionally popping out to fire one of your weapons. And fire your weapons you will, because your opponent will be trying to do the same while also summoning other soldiers or even armored vehicles. Fortunately you have your own small army at your disposal, and will be able to upgrade them along with your weapons as you progress.

The controls are pretty easy to grasp and it doesn't take long to start having fun. The real challenge is in not getting totally overwhelmed as helicopters, shotgunners, and snipers start taking shots at you.

Warfriends will be available for free later this summer.

GDC 2015 - This is Why Everybody's Talking About Downwell

Posted by Rob Rich on March 6th, 2015

So Downwell. Holy crap.

Ojiro Fumoto's GDC showpiece is one part roguelike, another part Metroid, and yet another part Cave Story, which is every bit as fantastic as it sounds.

The basic idea is that you control a character who can run left and right, jump, and shoot straight down while in the air. The catch is that there's a finite amount of ammo available, and it only refills when you land. The other catch is that if you die, it's back to the beginning. Pair that setup with falling down a seemingly endless (and randomly generated) vertical shaft and being able to purchase or find upgrades and you've got the makings of one great action game. And it is a great action game; the handful of minutes I got to spend playing it made that perfectly clear.

The only unfortunate thing about Downwell is that we're going to have to wait until July to get our hands on it.

It's Guild vs. Guild in Summoners War's Newest Update!

Summoners War, by Com2uS Corp., is getting guild battles in its newest update. Every week, Guild Leaders or Vice Leaders can initiate guild battles that will be auto-matched against opponents based on their guild points. The 2 round battles are 3v3 match-ups, where players use a team of 6 monsters to fight. During the fight, you'll be able to choose 3 monsters to defend instead of fighting. Every time you win, you'll get guild points and guild experience based on the strength of your opponent. The update also introduces a bunch of new characters called Ice Warriors, as well as added fusion recipes.

You can join the fight by downloading Summoners War for free on the App Store.

GDC 2015 - Toast USA's Line-Up is Looking Pretty Darn Cool

Posted by Rob Rich on March 6th, 2015

Guardian Stone

Guardian Stone has been in the works for quite some time, but it's finally getting close to a release. But what is it, exactly? Basically it's an adventure RPG where players control one of three characters (a fighter, an archer, and a magic user) and beat the tar out of all sorts of fantasy-ish creatures.

The hook is that these characters can team up with "guardians," which are basically spirits or somesuch and can perform all sorts of incredibly powerful magical attacks. It'a a pretty nice looking game, I have to admit. And the flashy, almost over-the-top animations for the special attacks are pretty darn cool to boot.

Guardian Stone will be soft launching next month, and will most likely be releasing as a free download shortly after that.

The Soul

The Soul, on the other hand, is more of an action RPG. It also takes place during what many gamers probably recognize as the "Three Kingdoms" era (i.e. Dynasty Warriors, but it's not actually a part of the license).

Players get to hack their way through all sorts of enemies, and eventually some pretty recognizable bosses, all in the name of character levels and skills. Technically they're soul powers, but they're totally skills. And there are over 150 of them to collect and decide between.

You should be able to find The Soul on the App Store around the same time as Guardian Stone.

Kill Me Again

And then there's Kill Me Again. I shouldn't be this excited about a match-3 puzzle game, let alone one involving zombies, but I totally am.

Minute details are still being hammered out as the game is still quite a ways away from release, but the basic gist is that players match things in order to attack zombies. The reason this has me all excited is because the action up top looks quite impressive, for one thing, and because the types of combos you set up will pull off flashier (and more damaging) attacks. Sometimes it will also leave special power-ups behind that can be tapped on to trigger other equally flashy moves.

Maybe I'm just a sucker for the production values, but I think Kill Me Again is worth keeping an eye on all the same.

Heavenstrike Rivals: Beginners's Tips, Tricks, and Strategies

Posted by Campbell Bird on March 6th, 2015

Dig this:
Would you like to know what we thought of this steampunk strategy game? Check out our Heavenstrike Rivals review!

The Basics

  • Use Your Captain's Powers: As part of the game, each player's captain gets a special power. This can heal units, damage others, or cast other status effects. These powers refresh after a certain amount of turns. Players that use and time their powers according to a timeframe that aids their overall strategy will go far.

  • Use All The Lanes: When starting out, you may be tempted to plop units into a lane and then forget about them. However, changing lanes is key to Heavenstrike Rivals's strategy. As long as your units are taunted or blocked by another unit, feel free to switch around units willy nilly to keep opponents guessing. Also, when playing on maps with power up tiles, units can lane change onto the tile to receive the power up, and then can be moved back to their original spot. How cool is that?

  • Keep Your Units Alive: Even the strongest units in the game can't do much to help you if they don't stay on the battlefield long enough to fulfill their intended purpose. Additionally, some units and unit types get stronger the longer they are in play, so it's worth putting in the effort.

Squad Building

  • Don't Underestimate Basic Units: When players start out in the game, they may want to start getting as many high powered units as possible in their squads, but this would be a mistake. The beginner units in Heavenstrike Rivals have low mana costs so they can get on the battlefield quickly. Considering the ultimate goal of the game demands players get within striking distance of their opponent, speed can be useful.

  • Build Squads With Balance and Purpose: As much as it might seem like a good idea to build a squad full of brawlers, defenders, or other units to max out bonuses afforded by special units, doing this is a lot like putting all of your eggs in one basket. For any one viable strategy in Heavenstrike Rivals, there is a super-effective counter strategy. Players that do not take this into account may stomp all over some opponents that are equally unbalanced, but struggle against thoughtful foes.

  • Build a Deck that Feels Comfortable: I know, this sounds almost overly basic, but it's important. As much as Heavenstrike Rivals doesn't look like a card game, it still operates like one. Putting in crazy new units that you aren't familiar with can cause a lack of synergy or introduce elements of randomness into your strategy, both of which are things you want to avoid.

Field Tactics

  • Mana Is A Limited Resource. Use It Wisely: All units cost a certain amount of mana, but all players can only have ten mana's worth of units out on the field at any given time. With this being the case, players should be careful about what they summon early on and what foes they decide to defeat. After all, there's no reason to kill a unit if it's handily tied up and you have the upper hand.

  • Time Summons Carefully: At first blush, it may look like a good idea to send out all of your units at once. However, if you are too careless and lose a lot of quickly summoned units early though, you may find themselves with a hand so empty they can't properly defend themselves.

  • Shut Down Gimmicks Early: As game that encourages players to incorporate unit synergy, players should be on the lookout for the key units their opponents are using in an attempt to tie their strategy together. For example, there are some units in the game that grant bonuses to every unit in play of a certain type, so taking out that unit as quickly as possible will minimize the impact of your opponent's strategy.

Future Shock Software's iNethack, one of the original rougle-like games released in 1987, was ported to iOS in 2009 by Dirk Zimmermann. Recently the game was updated to iNethack2. The strategic dungeon crawler had previously not been updated since 2010 so it no longer functioned on iOS 8. iNethack2 now works with current devices and Future Shock has added the additional bonus of 8 new tilesets to explore, new touchscreen gesture controls, customizable keyboard shortcut controls, and hearse (bones file sharing) integration.

Old fans and new players alike can enjoy iNethack2 for free on the App Store.

GDC 2015 - Nightmare Guardians is an Interesting Hybrid of MOBA and Lane Defense

Posted by Rob Rich on March 5th, 2015

I have to say that lane defense (i.e. games like Plants vs Zombies) and MOBAs (i.e. games like League of Legends) aren't exactly a combination I'd ever pictured before. But that's kind of what Rumble Entertainment's Nightmare Guardians is: a lane defense MOBA.

Unlike a typical MOBA (aside from the lane defense thing), Nightmare Guardians isn't about teams fighting other teams but rather a few players cooperating to fight off increasingly tough waves of enemies. Of course all the focus on special abilities and skills is still in there, and you can upgrade and swap out skills before each game. It's a pretty interesting and quick co-op game, really.

Nightmare Guardians will be hitting the App Store in late summer as a free download.

Miss playing as Batman? How about in LEGO form? LEGO Batman: Beyond Gotham, by TT Games, has Bats joining up with other super heroes of the DC Comics universe to save the earth from Brainiac's evil plans. The game, originally released for PC and consoles, is making its way to mobile this year.

Lastly, Mortal Kombat X, by NetherRealm Studios, promises to be a collectible card game with all the action of a classic Mortal Kombat game. It will feature cinematic gameplay, brutal fatalities, and a few all-new fighters exclusive to Mortal Kombat X. The app will also connect to the console or PC version of the game and give players the ability to unlock content cross-platform.

“In just four years, we have launched 25 games with more than 150 million installs worldwide across diverse fighting, strategy, puzzle and action adventure genres, and we will focus our business on a strong games-as-a-service model in 2015,” said Greg Ballard, Senior Vice President, Mobile, Social and Emerging Platforms, Warner Bros. Interactive Entertainment. “Our line-up of strong titles will deliver deep player engagement, as well as innovation like console game connectivity with games including Mortal Kombat X and Batman: Arkham Underworld.”

GDC 2015 - Star Trek Timelines will Probably Make Your Inner Trekkie Squeal With Glee

Posted by Rob Rich on March 4th, 2015

Any popular fictional universe has its fair share of fan fiction - where beloved characters might behave less like they're written and adhere more to personal head canon - and it's the sort of thing that there's no shortage of in Star Trek.

I'm dead serious. There are actually comic books and a novel that involve a Star Trek/X-Men crossover.

While Star Trek Timelines won't let you revel in a brawl between Wolverine and Worf, you will be able to play around with all sorts of alternate dimension and timeline stuff. If you want Locutus of Borg tending bar at Ten Forward, you can totally do that. If you want Captain Janeway to lead Bones and Sulu into battle, that can be arranged.

Of course this means you'll be gathering crew from all over the various Star Trek series. What's cool is that this isn't a typical card battler type thing like you might expect. Instead, when you take part in a mission there will be several branching paths that your team will follow depending on the outcome of each encounter or task. Characters are automatically matched to a task based on their stats and stills, and a random number roll (influenced even further by their skills) will determine the outcome. In a weird way it's kind of like a choose-your-own-adventure but without the choosing and more seeing what the outcome is.

There are some typical choose-your-own elements to it, however. Before and/or after some missions you might have a few dialog choices to pick from, and your approach to a given situation could have an effect on your future interactions. The game is really quite story-driven, with more of an emphasis on problem solving and talking things through over full on combat - which I'm totally okay with.

What's also pretty cool is that you'll be able to use all sorts of different recognizable ships, each of which can give your crew different passive stat bonuses. You can also assign different crew members to different room positions, which might increase those bonuses even further.

Star Trek Timelines will be coming out later this year as a free download, and will most likely use a F2P system similar to Game of Thrones Ascent.
