MyIdol Review

Viral sensations are frequently a little weird and that’s certainly the case with MyIdol. Coming out nowhere, it’s an app that’s solely available in Chinese (I’m going to assume Mandarin), yet is accessible enough that you can figure it out without any knowledge of the language. It’s essentially a way of making an Xbox Live-style avatar out of your face, proving to be quite fun and also a little creepy.

A lot of your time with MyIdol is going to be spent muddling through the options. The promise of an English language version soon is bound to entice even more users to the fold, but you can get by with guesswork. Starting out, you take a selfie of yourself (or snap a shot of someone else) before dragging a few reticules around to highlight the important parts of one’s face.

The more complex side of things is with adding that face to various avatars. You have a fair amount of control over what can be done here, enabling you to place your face on many different outfits. I ended up creating a Hulk style character with a ridiculously short skirt on, and that kind of epitomizes what can be accomplished here.

You can create various assets from what’s available here, and a lot of the fun within MyIdol is experimentation. At times, you’ll be bumbling through, desperately wishing you understood the language. In a way though, that quirkiness is what makes it seem more interesting.

Ultimately, it’s a passing fad. The kind of thing that’s going to end up in a trivia game at some point, leaving us all to wonder just what was so exciting about MyIdol in the first place. For now though, it’s kind of a fun way to add some extra personality to your face and mess around to show things off to your friends.
