Micronytes Director's Cut Review

When I say it isn’t for everyone, I mean it mostly because of its art design. While certain biology-themed games do a great job of striking one’s interest by focusing on the idea of discovery and evolution in relation to that science, Micronytes Director's Cut was intended for no such purpose.

This game presents a far less appealing portrayal of a human’s immune system, sending players to a pretty slimy and sometimes disgusting environment that the hero must venture through before locating the gooey virus (and squashing it). But for people who aren’t bothered by that concept, Micronytes goes on to surpass the ranks of bad games that, many times, are also oriented towards the sort of theme that certain individuals might find unappealing.

In terms of gameplay, the controls are responsive and don’t leave much room for frustrating incidents like losing a level because “the hero didn’t jump when I told him to”. The physics work well too, making one’s character able to slide and jump off of walls and killing him if he falls from a high distance. Speaking of which, players should prepare themselves for plenty of deaths. Micronytes isn’t so much about destroying viruses on the way to the next exit - there’s only one virus (which actually marks that exit) - but about finding a way to reach that exit as it's paved with a good amount of deadly obstacles and tricky interactions. Whenever a hero dies (and there are plenty of different ways to die), his body remains there and another, identical one takes his place.

Getting a high score on each level depends on two things: the first is to find and collect the hidden pill (just one); the second isn’t about finishing within the time limit (because there isn’t one), but rather seeing how fast one can finish it. So there’s no 3 star rating system, which makes every level more about reaching to the other end as quickly as possible. It usually takes less than a minute to get through, but it will often take more than one try to actually finish the level. There is also a decent amount of puzzling to it, meaning that players will have to think their way through a bit as opposed to simply jumping and dodging different obstacles.

Overall, Micronytes Director’s Cut is a decent game that may not offer anything too spectacular, but does enough to keep the right audience amused for a while.
