League of War is a lot like a Tower Defense game without the towers. It's a strategy game, although that level of strategy is more akin to Rock, Paper, Scissors than anything complex, pitting modern weaponry at weaponry of an equal weight. Ultimately, it's an entertaining distraction. It lacks the depth of other titles, but that doesn't mean it's not a reasonable time waster.

Players control an armed force as they tackle various missions via a campaign or choose to fight it out with real players in a separate multiplayer mode. The structure is the same either way with players presented with a battleground and left to pick which unit type to unleash first. League of War takes resource gathering back to its basics. On the bottom of the screen is a resources button, gradually increasing over time, and positioned next to the various units that can be deployed. Those units can be pretty varied, encompassing ground troops, air support, light and heavy armor, as well as artillery. Each unit varies in cost depending on their overall strength, so while paratroopers are swiftly deployed, tanks take much longer to introduce.

It's a simple concept but one that works reasonably well for a quick way to see some progress. It's possible to boost resource production but that takes up time and resources, so it's a constant balancing act. Alongside the Rock, Paper, Scissors style gameplay, there's also that need to deploy the right type of troops at the right time in order to counteract invading forces.

Unfortunately, after a time, things do become more noticeably shallow. The battle terrains never change, sticking to flat and somewhat unexciting backdrops, plus the gameplay is ultimately the same. Efforts are there to make League of War more eventful, such as the ability to train units, recruit new ones, and forge alliances with friends, but none of that changes up the core gameplay.

League of War is still briefly fun and easily dipped into (which is convenient given it has a restrictive energy bar), but don't expect anything revolutionary here. One session with League of War will show players exactly what to expect for the duration.

Pit tank against tank in this strategy game that's a little on the shallow side, but not a bad way to spend a few minutes.
