Five Nights at Freddy's creator Scott Cawthon is stepping back from the popular horror franchise. In an updated post on Steam this week, Cawthon explained that he's cancelled his latest project in the series because he no longer has the drive to do the games justice.  Cawthon told fans:

...after forcing myself to keep working on it day after day, I realized something- I just don’t want to work on this. With each game's release, I think the expectations get higher and higher for the next, and rightfully so. Each game SHOULD be better than the last! But that pressure starts to mount, and I fear that I've been neglecting other things in my life for the sake of trying to keep up with those mounting expectations.

Many fans assumed Cawthon was merely trolling, but he returned to Steam to assure followers that he was, indeed, serious about taking a break, and that the next entry in the series was really, truly cancelled. Cawthon said that he wants to get back to what made him fall in love with creating games in the first place, and might return to build something a bit more lighthearted the next time around.
