Falldown Cubed is described as a “tower based platformer” and sees the player try and guide a cube down an ever advancing tower. While the game has that addictive spark about it, the in-game adverts cause some frustrating technical problems.
Falldown Cubed has the most basic premise ever. When the player boots up the game they will find a cube sitting atop a platform. The platform has a hole in it, and it’s pretty much implied that the player needs to drag the cube over and drop it through the hole. When this happens two things will occur. The first thing is the cube will land on the platform below, which again will have a hole in it.
The second, and rather more alarming event is that the platform the cube is on will begin to rise up at a fairly fast pace. The idea is to keep dropping the cube through the holes in every platform so that it doesn’t reach the top of the screen. Players can’t cheat by simply dragging the cube over the edge of the platform, as that counts as a life lost. The cube must go through a designated hole.
To keep the player on their toes the game introduces a number of power-ups, which will either help or hinder. Basically, anything purple is bad news and will slow the cube down.
The clock power-up will give the player a brief respite, while the turbo boost is meant to help but can actually do more harm than good and cause the player the accidentally drop the cube over the edge.
The controls are easy to understand, with the player simply dragging their finger where they want the cube to go, but sometimes aren’t as responsive as they should be. By far the biggest problem with the game though is the adverts.
As the game is free to play, adverts will pop up on the top of the screen frequently. Unfortunately this causes a second (or sometimes even more) of lag which makes for an unsatisfying experience. An advert-free version is available for $0.99.
Falldown Cubed is a good game when played in short bursts, but the lag caused by adverts is very disappointing indeed.
