Butterfly Sky felt familiar from the moment I started playing, and it should have, since it's no secret that it is the direct result of combining the gameplay mechanics of two of the App Store's most popular games: Doodle Jump and Tiny Wings. Fortunately for players, that is a great combination.
After being launched from the blowhole of a friendly whale, players must time their butt-bounces correctly if they want help their globular little buddy (Is it a potato? Piece of corn with limbs? Whatever it is, it's unsettling...) continue on his journey along the clouds. The speed of his descent is controlled by holding a finger on the screen, depending on whether he needs to dip earlier rather later. The aim is to get as far as possible, while collecting butterflies along the way for the whale to eat afterwards (no one said this had to make sense).
There are various powerups including a rocket jetpack, a butterfly magnet, and a parrot that acts as a safety net for any wayward landings. There are upgrades available and multiple costumes to unlock, but while none of the latter contributes towards gameplay, at least they go towards covering up more of that little yellow weirdo. With 4 maps of varying difficulty, there is a lot here to keep casual gamers amused.
Butterfly Sky is a fun little game to waste a few minutes with. Strangely though, it doesn't have the same impact or addictive quality as the two games it's inspired by. Younger players will no doubt love it, but those who have seen this type of thing before might pass it off as old hat.
