Splyce Review

Carter Dotson Is Not A DJ. That’s what my tombstone will likely read. Or that’s what it would have, until I used Splyce. Finally, DJ-ing is within my grasp. Suck it, partygoers! It’s time to get down to progressive metal!

Splyce is all about mixing together music to make for a rockin’ DJ set at a party, or at least a more interesting shuffle set. Load up the app, pick from on-device songs, and then let Splyce work its magic in figuring out the BPM for each song. Then the app will play back songs on the tracklist, but with various options. Songs can be mixed into one another to try and create the perfect transition. Songs can be made to be sped up or slow down to match a set BPM to ensure that the party’s bumping at a certain rhythm. Finally, the list can be ordered either manually or even by slower to faster, to ensure that folks will be ready to go crazy by the end.

Finally, something about DJ-ing makes sense! When songs are put in a good order it does sound pretty cool, and songs do transition well. The BPM detection does help to make a list of songs that will fit together and to arrange them easily. The visual beat function can be used to make the device beat with the song’s current BPM, though this can drain battery rather quickly. What is cool is that this can be synced up with Phillips Hue LEDs, for extra coolness.

Splyce’s BPM modification on the fly is kind of clever, but it can wind up warping some songs to the point where they sound unrecognizable. It works best with subtle shifts. This can be disabled entirely though. In fact, there’s enough customization that’s easily explained to make even the novice music mixer feel like an expert. The app’s design, featuring color gradients and a flat look, looks like it’ll fit in perfectly with iOS 7.

Splyce is free to try with some advanced features available for a $0.99 unlock. I can only hope that a service like Spotify or iTunes Radio gets integrated in the future, as that would be absolutely perfect for parties, and would make Splyce just that much better.
