Pirate Go review

Pirate Go is a headscratcher at times and that's exactly why I loved playing it.

It's a puzzle game that's reminiscent of Lemmings. You have to guide Pirate Fairy through each level without killing the poor little mite. The catch being that once you press the relevant button, Pirate Fairy starts walking and can only be guided by using environmental barriers. So you have to place items such as blocks or staircases to send him in the right direction. Further levels offer more involved items such as levers and bombs.

There are 70 levels in all, each increasingly more complex. The first 9 levels kindly introduce the various elements to you so that you're not too baffled by anything, but things quickly become challenging. It's terrific fun, though. You can quietly sit back and eye up the surroundings of each level, figuring out a plan of action. Trial and error works, too, of course, but it's just as satisfying plotting your course of action first. It's simple to move the various blocks around so even a more casual gamer can adjust to this well. Some of the puzzles will infuriate you, but once you figure out the solution you'll groan at yourself for not realising just how obvious it actually was.

I quickly found myself dropping in and out of Pirate Go at every opportunity, just to try to figure out one more puzzle before I had to go do something more productive.

Pirate Go's developers also seem all too happy to provide support for the game currently, with a Halloween theme having been added and the promise that more levels will be added in future updates. Considering the amount of content already available, Pirate Go is an utter bargain if you like puzzle games of this sort. It's just the kind of cerebral fun that I can always welcome into my gaming life.
