Big Ear is a smart and accessible puzzle game that aims to demystify the creative process behind making music. It offers a collection of in-depth, though straightforward, tools that can be used to create your own original compositions or even to re-create a varied selection of famous tunes. And thanks to its ambitious premise and impressive social elements, this one took home the second place prize at last year’s Big Indie Pitch in Shanghai.

You’ll start out in Big Ear by solving puzzles and creating famous tunes from nothing. You’ll take on the role of budding musician, Solo, who, together with their band, will work toward becoming the next big thing in the world of music. If you do happen to need some additional help, your bandmates are always available to help. The band is made up of Sticky the drummer, Finga the keyboard player, Bossy the bass player, Kitaro the guitarist, and Okto the marimba player. By working alongside these skilled musicians, you’ll gradually pick up how to structure a song, as well as the essential elements of rhythm, melody, and harmony.

Big Ear’s current tracklist is packed with an impressive selection of hit songs, including I’m Yours, Despacitio, Shook Me All Night Long, and The Way You Look Tonight. If you want to try your hand at making your own original music, the game’s in-depth composer tool is a great way to start. On top of that, you’ll also be able to create personalised videos and pictures by completing in-game puzzles.

Starting out in a less than ideal garage, you’ll gradually work your way through the musical world to become a stadium-filling star. And to help you along on your journey, the Big Ear team has partnered with artists like Apocalypta and Darude to inspire beginners and help establish a passionate, musically-minded community.

The early access version of Big Ear has now launched. And while it’s free to play at the moment, it will eventually move to a subscription-based model once more premium songs are made available. If you’re looking for an accessible and relaxing way to be creative and make music, Big Ear is the ideal game for you. So make a quick trip to the App Store or Google Play to try it out now.
