Age of Defenders Review

It’s been a while since I last played a tower defense game and Age of Defenders has reminded me of exactly why I enjoy the genre so much. It could do with offering a little more speed to proceedings, but other than that, it’s a solidly dependable release.

There’s a story in there, one told through cutscenes and snippets of dialogue, but I’ll admit I didn’t pay huge attention to it, although there are a few moments of light humor to glean from the dialogue. It does provide convenient context for the tutorial though. Age of Defenders is split into two distinct forms of strategy gaming with a defensive side of things and an offensive side.

The former is typical stuff, albeit well designed and laid out. You place towers and turrets to ward off enemies coming from multiple different spawn points. An early mission has you protecting a convoy through this method with there also being places to mine for more resources. Where Age of Defenders gets a little more original is how it offers stages that begin like this but also add an offence based element.

These sections have you defending your base while also sending out units to attack your enemy’s base, meaning you’ve got two different things to keep an eye on. That ensures that Age of Defenders frequently feels quite fresh. This is further reinforced by regular upgrades being unlocked to strengthen your side.

The downside is that it can make Age of Defenders a little slow at times. For instance, watching that aforementioned convoy moving slowly through the area can get a little dull for the well-organized and impatient gamer. It’s mostly worth it though, as Age of Defenders is otherwise a very well made strategy game. Throw in the multiplayer support and you’re on to a winner with this one.
