Font Monsters

Remember Typing of the Dead? That brilliant typing-based conversion of House of the Dead? The one where you shoot words at zombies instead of bullets? Font Monsters is very much like it, which instantly makes it rather brilliantly fun in my book.

Font Monster pits you against various font-based creatures. To kill them, you have to type the letters that form their bodies. Screenshots help hugely with explaining this as it does sound rather strange. Each stage offers one monster which is made up of numerous different letters.

For example, their eyes might be made from the @ symbol while their legs are made up of a combination of L and J. Sometimes these symbols will be upside down or constantly moving, making it harder to recognize. If you tap the wrong letter or symbol, the monster fires a bullet at you made up of another letter. Swiftness is also vital as the monster is moving gradually closer and closer to you at all times.

Each stage is progressively harder and there's a boss at the end of each of the 5 levels. The bosses are even more challenging with a whole wealth of different letters and symbols to hit. There's a fair amount to do, too, as while it's the same concept every time, there's also a good couple hundred different monsters to kill. The developers are also promising paid updates to offer even more stages to complete.

Font Monsters is an awful lot of fun. The strategy involved in reading and figuring out what each monster is made out of makes for a particularly entertaining experience. It's a simple idea but one that makes you sit back and wonder why no one's done it before. It might have limited replayability in the end but it'll be a while till you get there. Well worth a purchase indeed.
